Ghana - El Mina - A local priest stands on the rooftop of the castle. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Castle of Elmina was built by the Portuguese in 1487 and was the first “slave fort” to be erected along the West Africa coast. Today, the Elmina coast is threatened by coastal erosion, mostly due to uncontrolled sand mining which has permanently damaged the town's beaches.
