Indonesia – Sumatra – Aceh – Lampuuk – Sulaiman Amin, the 62-year-old imam prays on the rooftop of the mosque, the only building still standing in the whole village after the tsunami. Amin was caught by the waves in his house, together with his 18-year-old son and his wife. He remembers that the waters had reached the height of the dome. It was the only visible thing in a village that had turned into open sea. Amin ended up five km inland and was rescued in the evening. He had lost his wife, his son and his livelihood, a small rice processing factory for which he never received any compensation. “Now I have no pension, no income and I have to survive on the alms of the people”. Three years after the tsunami, Amin was chosen as the new imam from the community, a job he takes very seriously. “I survived because of God's will” he says convincingly.
