In these years Fongang tried to enter Europe several times, first by climbing the barrier between Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla and then by trying to cross the Mediterranean, from Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa. His failures have taken a toll not only on the family's finances, but on the young man's psyche as well. "It was extremely hard for him to see his friends pass, while he was always rejected. He also saw a lot of his comrades dying during the attempted crossings."
