Ghana - Keta - Several West African countries have built groynes and sea defence walls in order to stabilize parts of the coast. Groynes are structures made of stones, built perpendicularly to the coast in order to stop the natural flow of sediments and “trap” them in order to prevent erosion. Although groynes are effective in the short term, allowing the beaches where they are built on to replenish themselves, they prevent sediments to move naturally, thus increasing erosion in other coastline areas.
