Cambodia - Kampong Speu Province - A booklet of the United Nations declaration of Human Rights Defenders stands among Cheng's family pictures. Cheng Sopheap, 46, lives in the village of Ploch. As the community representative for the commune of Tror Peangchor, he represented several families affected by land grabbing during talks with authorities and sugar companies. Although he was farly compensated, having received 6 hectares of land for the 7,5 he lost, Sopheap claims authority tried several times to intimidate and bribe him in order to win the resistance of the affected families. “Thirty families have been resettled in this area, and this is all thanks to my activism” he says. Still, he claims his income his lower than before, and some of his kids have been forced to work as labourers in the sugar plantation to make ends meet.
