Started in 2013, the Black Mambas now enroll 26 girls in their 20s or early 30s, all coming from the destitute communities surrounding the Kruger National Park. Nowadays, the team patrols more than 400 square kilometres within the adjoining Balule Nature Reserve. In a country that lost almost 1,200 rhinos to poaching last year, Black Mambas have reduced illegal hunting activities by 76 percent by chasing poachers, removing snares and engaging local communities in environmental conservation programs.
