Morocco - The argan tree is endemic to the South-West of Morocco and sustains the economy of the whole region. Apart from its precious oil, its fruits are used for feeding domestic animals and its branches are often employed to make firewood or charcoal. A natural barrier against desertification, despite being protected by UNESCO the argan forest is threatened by over-exploitation and the expansion of the nearby cities of Essaouira and Agadir.
