Uzbekistan - Tashkent - A musician wearing a Soviet militia uniform stands before the entrance of the Ilkhom Theatre.
The strong correlation between music and acting has become one of Ilkhom’s most famous trademarks.
Ilkhom (“inspiration” in Uzbek language) was created in 1976 by a group of artists led by director Marc Weil. It was the only independent theatre in the whole Soviet Union and has remained the only non-state theatre since the independence of Uzbekistan. The theatre, which has just 150 seating places, is hosted in a former potato warehouse, in the basement of a semi-abandoned hotel complex in the centre of Tashkent.
