China - In August 2018 China inaugurated a wine train connecting the country’s capital Beijing to the wine producing region of Ningxia to promote the Helan East Mount Hill wine region.
China’s interest in wine rose in the late 90s after state leaders praised its benefits in comparison to traditional grain-based liquors, which were diverting billions of kilos of staple food towards the production of alcohol.
Ningxia is a small autonomous region in the northwest part of China. It borders Inner Mongolia and is protected from the high winds of the Gobi desert by the Helan Mountains. In the past 20 years, Ningxia has seen its agricultural production skyrocket thanks to vast land reclamation and irrigation projects spearheaded by the local government.
